What is P0863 fault code and what does it mean? What is the Transmission Control Module’s Communication Circuit Malfunction error message code? How can you fix P0863 fault code What are the causes and symptoms for the P0863 fault code

What is the P0863 fault code? What does it all mean?

P0863 stands for “Code” “Transmission Control Module (TCM) Communication Circuit Malfunction” It is when there is a communication interruption between the engine control module, (ECM), and the TCM/other control modules.

Modern vehicles include two dozen or so control modules that are interconnected by the CAN (Controller Area Network). In simple words, the CAN bus system consists a number of thousands circuits and cables. Its job is to enable various sensors, switches and module to exchange data.

The TCM, for example, collects data from speed sensors, throttle position sensor and steering angle sensor. This information is then transmitted to the ECM via CAN bus. This data is used by the ECM to improve engine performance, optimize fuel usage, and calculate shift points.

Each control module has at least one closely related control module. This module monitors all other control modules. The auxiliary control module will detect a problem with the TCM and set a fault code. If the ECM and other control modules are unable to receive data from the TCM then the ECM cannot effectively manage gear changes. Code P0863 will be issued.

P0863 fault codes can be found on many vehicles, including but not limited to: Volvo, Citroen and Fiat, Opel Skoda Dodge, Honda, Volkswagen, Volkswagen, Ford.

What is the P0863 Fault Code?

Below are some reasons to set fault code P0863:

  • – Damaged or broken cables and/or connectors within the CAN bus system
  • TCM/ECM that has a problem or requires a software upgrade (in most cases these two modules are combined and are known as PCM).

What are the symptoms of the P0863 Fault code?

You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P0863:

  • – Illumination for the check engine light
  • – Transmission fault light is on
  • – Incorrect or delayed gear changes
  • Transmission may not shift to all gears or one.
  • – Overheating engine and gearbox
  • – Smoke and strong odors from the gearbox
  • – Increased fuel use
  • – The vehicle may enter safe mode, and the vehicle can only be restricted to a specific gear

How do I fix the P0863 fault code?

The following repairs may be able to resolve the P0863 fault code:

  • Repair of damaged connectors and cables in the CAN bus network
  • – Reprogramming and replacement of the transmission control modules
  • – Reprogramming and replacing the engine control module
  • – Updating ECM/TCM software

How Serious Is the P0863 Fault Code

Fault code 0863 should be taken seriously as the failure of one of the control modules directly impacts several other modules. This code can cause further damage to your vehicle and even make it undriveable.
