What is P0897 fault code and what does it mean? What is Transmission Fluid Bad? How do you fix the P0897 fault code What are the causes and symptoms of the P0897 error code?

What is the P0897 Fault code? What does it all mean?

This code is visible on automatic transmissions that have a temperature sensor for transmission oil. When the powertrain control module, or PCM, detects a general fluid problem in the transmission fluid. Low fluid levels can cause this, or it can indicate a more serious problem in the pressure control system.

An automatic transmission switches between gear ratios using transmission fluid under high pressure. If the PCM receives an indication that the current gear number is different than the specified one, P0897 is activated.

Note: Depending on the vehicle manufacturer, P0897 might have a different definition. The vehicle’s repair manual, or repair database, will provide a detailed description of the code.

What is the P0897 Fault Code?

Fault code P0897 can be triggered by the following common causes:

  • Low transmission fluid level
  • – Transmission fluid not meeting manufacturer specifications.
  • – Transmission fluid that is contaminated or dirty
  • – Defective or damaged shift solenoids
  • Obstructive transmission fluid lines
  • – Blockage of transmission filter
  • – Defective electronic pressure regulator
  • – Defective transmission pump
  • – Transmission internal mechanical problems
  • – Defective PCM / TCM

What are the symptoms for the P0897 fault code?

These symptoms may be present in vehicles with code P0897.

  • – Illumination at the check engine lights
  • – Vehicle shaking or jolts
  • Transmission stuck in any gear
  • – Delay and hard gear changes
  • – Increased fuel use
  • – The gearbox is overheated
  • – Gearbox slip
  • – Insufficient power for acceleration

How do I fix the P0897 fault code?

When diagnosing a code P0897, the first thing you should do is check the transmission fluid level and condition. It should be replaced immediately if it is dirty. Transmission oil leaks must also be fixed. It is also important to check the transmission wiring harness for damage. If there are no obvious problems, the transmission pump must be tested.

There are several repairs that can resolve the P0897 fault code.

  • – Topping up and checking the transmission fluid level
  • – Replace the transmission fluid that is not in compliance with manufacturer specifications, or of poor quality.
  • – Repairing damaged wiring and loose connectors.
  • – Fixing transmission fluid leaks
  • Cleaning blocked transmission fluid passage lines
  • – Replacing a defective transmission oil pump
  • – Replacing defective shift solenoids
  • Replacing an electronic pressure regulator that is not working properly
  • – Replacing the defective PCM/TCM

Sometimes, P0897 is accompanied by other fault codes that are related to gear ratios. It is best to diagnose and fix fault codes in the order they appear.
