What is P0904 fault code? What is Transmission Gear Select Position Circuit Failure? How do you fix the P0904 fault code What are the symptoms and causes for the P0904 fault code

What is the P0904 Fault code? What does it mean?

Many sensors are found in modern vehicles, including speed sensors, pressure sensors and temperature sensors. The sensors monitor and control the transmission’s performance. These sensors are monitored continuously by the powertrain control (PCM) and transmission control (TCM). One of these sensors, the gear select location (GSP), tells the PCM/TCM what gear the vehicle has. It may be mounted on the gear linkage or lever depending on what automaker. These sensors can also be used in manual transmission vehicles to detect brake slippage or clutch slippage. The P0904 code is triggered if the PCM/TCM does not receive a signal from the sensor.

The P0904 fault code can affect vehicles from various manufacturers, including Citroen and Suzuki, Mercedes, Peugeot and Hyundai.

What causes the P0904 Fault code?

Here are some reasons why P0904 should be set.

  • Faulty electrical connections
  • – Broken cables or loose connector connections
  • – Sensor to detect misaligned gear position
  • – Defective gear selector position sensor

What are the symptoms for the P0904 fault code?

These symptoms may be present in vehicles with code P0904.

  • – If the PCM/TCM detects the exact same fault, the check engine light will be illuminated for 2 to 3 driving cycle
  • Cruise control not working
  • – Sometimes the engine might not start at all

How to Fix the P0904 Fault Code

There are several repairs that can resolve the P0904 fault code:

  • Your mechanic might have misaligned or not tightened the bolts properly after a transmission repair. The problem could be fixed by realigning the sensor at the gear select position (GSP).
  • – Repair or replacement of electrical components not functioning properly
  • – Repair and replacement damaged cables and loose connectors
  • GSP sensors can, as with all electronic devices in general, fail. Drinks spilled on the sensor’s center console can cause corrosion and malfunction. The problem may be fixed by replacing the sensor.

How Serious Is the P0904 Fault Code

The PCM/TCM may not be able to detect the vehicle’s gear position and may cause the vehicle to stop starting. This code should be corrected as soon as possible.
