What is the P1102 fault code? What does it signify?

A code P1102 is set by the powertrain control module (PCM) when the voltage signal from the mass air flow (MAF) sensor is within manufacturer-specified limits but lower than expected.

The MAF sensor measures air volume and quantity entering the engine. This information is sent to the PCM. This data is used by the PCM to adjust fuel injection timing and ignition timing, and calculate the optimal air-fuel combination.

The MAF sensor uses either a hot wire platinum wire or a heating element made of nickel foil, which is powered by an electrical current from the PCM. The nickel foil is heated to a certain degree (about 93°C / 200°F) by a microprocessor inside the sensor. The foil is cooled by the airflow that is drawn into the motor. As the airflow increases the PCM sends more electricity to maintain the temperature. The current change is what allows the PCM detect the amount of air entering an engine and adjusts fuel injection to maintain the correct mixture.

If the voltage signal sent from the MAF sensor to PCM is lower that expected, but still within manufacturer’s limits, a P1102 fault codes will be triggered.

Some vehicles are prone to P1102 fault code. This includes, but is not limited, to various Ford, Jaguar and Lincoln models as well as Mercury, Oldsmobile and Mercedes-Benz models.
