What is the P2189 fault code number? What is the definition of the System Idling Too Lean fault (Bank 2)? How can you fix P2189 fault? What are the causes and symptoms of the P2189 error code?

What is the P2189 fault code? What does it all mean?

Fault code P2189 is a sign “System Too Lean at Idling.” . This is a sign that there is too many air in the combustion chamber while it is idle and not enough fuel. Many components can cause this issue. The powertrain control module, or PCM, uses multiple sensors to maintain the engine at idle speed and determine the air-fuel ratio. The PCM is capable of controlling the air-fuel mix (approximately 25%) to a certain point. If the difference exceeds the required level, the P2189 fault code will trigger.

The code description says that “Bank 2” is for engines with multiple banks of cylinders (eg V6,V8). Bank 2 is the engine bank without the engine’s #1 piston.

The P2189 fault code can affect vehicles of all makes and models, including but not limited to: BMW, Hyundai, Volkswagen Jaguar, Range Rovers, Mazda, Cadillacs, Kia, Ferrari and Porsche.

What is the P2189 Fault Code and Why Does It Happen?

These are the most common reasons that P2189 fault codes are triggered:

  • – Defective upstream oxygen sensor (Bank 2)
  • – Corroded, damaged, or burnt wiring to the respective sensors.
  • – Leakage or damage to the fuel filler cap gasket
  • Capacity for loose and leaking oil filler cap
  • Leaky intake gasket
  • – Loose intake manifold
  • Vacuum leaks around the engine intake
  • – Defective Mass Air Flow (MAF) or the MAP Sensor
  • – Defective canister valve
  • – A defective crankcase breather valve
  • False sensor readings due to exhaust system leakage
  • – Defective fuel injectors (Bank 2)
  • – Defective fuel pressure regulator
  • – Defective variable camshaft timing
  • Fuel filter clogged
  • – Defective fuel pump causing low fuel pressure
  • – Spark plugs that are dirty or damaged
  • – Turbocharger problems

What are the symptoms for P2189’s Fault Code?

These symptoms may be present if you own a vehicle that has the code 2189.

  • – Illumination and control of the check engine light
  • – Reduced engine performance
  • – Engine hard starting (especially in hot weather)
  • – Fluctuations of idle speed
  • – The engine may stop when it is cold or idling.
  • While idling, engine may be running hotter than usual
  • – Wistling, hissing sounds coming from the engine
  • – Engine may hesitate during acceleration
  • – Fuel odors

How do I fix the P2189 fault code?

This code can be affected by many components. It is recommended that components be checked by a qualified technician.

The following repairs may be able to resolve the P2189 fault code:

  • Repairing air leaks caused by multiple issues in the intake
  • – Repairing a damaged fuel filler cap gasket
  • – Repairing or replacing an oil filler cap that is damaged or missing.
  • – Repair or replacement exhaust system components that are leaking
  • – Replacing fuel injectors that are not working in bank 2
  • – Replacing a defective MAF/MAP sensor
  • – Repair damaged wires, rusty connections, short circuit or open issues, and check wires and connections to sensors
  • – Replacing a faulty fuel pressure regulator
  • Repairing a damaged canister valve
  • – Repair of vacuum leaks
  • – Replacing a defective crankcase washer or breather valve
  • – Replacing the defective oxygen sensor (Bank 2).
  • – Replacing an inefficiently running fuel pump
  • – Clean and replace the clogged fuel filter
  • – Repair of fuel lines that are blocked
