What’s the function of the Transmission Speed Sensor

The transmission speed sensors can be used to determine the speed of your vehicle and calculate the transmission’s actual gear ratio. These sensors can also be compared to other sensors, allowing for full control of functions like engine ignition timing and fuel mixture ratio.

Two speed sensors work together to provide precise information to the engine computer. The other is called the Input Shaft Speed Sensor (ISS) . This sensor calculates the rotational speed of either the input shaft or the torque converter. The other is called the Output Shaft Speed Sensor (Output Shaft Speed Sensor (OSS)) . This sensor calculates the speed of your vehicle. This sensor provides the information that is used to calculate speed and odometer.

Note: If you have undersized tires, your speed will be higher than normal. This happens because the shaft spins faster. Your vehicle will have a lower speed if it has larger tires than normal. This will allow you to pass other vehicles, even though you are following the speed limit.

These two speed sensors are also known as Vehicle Speed Sensors (VSS). . The ECU calculates data from both speed sensors to ensure that the vehicle is efficient and shifts to the right gear. If the desired and current gear ratios do not match, the ECU will emit an error code and light the Check Engine Warning Lamp.

Some transmission speed sensors drive by gear mechanisms. However, most speed sensors use magnets to change the signal as the shaft rotates.

What are the symptoms of a Transmission Speed Sensor Failure?

These sensors are more sensitive than standard vehicle equipment. One of the sensors can go out of alignment, or experience electrical problems, which will impact the operation of your entire transmission. These problems may be present in your vehicle.

 

1- Incorrect or Hard Shifting Gear

The ECU can’t control transmission gear changes without a valid speed signal from these sensors. This could cause gear changes to be more difficult and quicker than usual. A problem with these sensors could also affect shift timing and cause it to take longer. Hydraulic control is used to regulate automatic transmissions. The gear shifting should be smooth. If gear shifts are not smooth, internal components, such as valve stems and hydraulic lines, can be damaged. If you notice that your gear shifts are not working correctly or are not smooth, contact a mechanic immediately.

 

2-Cruise Control Doesn’t Work

The cruise control’s control is also influenced by the transmission speed sensors. They monitor the input shaft speed and the output shaft speed. The ECU will generate an error code if the sensors fail to transmit correct data. The ECU disables the cruise control and turns it off as a safety measure. If the cruise control is not engaging when you press the button contact a mechanic. They will inspect your vehicle to determine the reason for the cruise control not working. A faulty transmission speed sensor could be the cause of your cruise control not working.

 

3-Speedometer is not working

The speed sensor may be defective if it does not move while you drive or if it starts moving with a delay after your vehicle moves. Speed sensors are not repairable and must be replaced in the event of failure.

 

4- Engine Check Warning Lamp On

If the voltage signals of speed sensors are incorrectly detected, the ECU generates fault codes and illuminates the Check Engine warning lamp on the instrument cluster. A rise in exhaust emissions could also cause the malfunction lamp to illuminate. It is important to identify the problem and take action. The fault codes will then be reset.

Your mechanic should replace the speed sensor if the problem is caused. You may find speed sensors in the transmission. You may need to lower the transmission completely in order to replace the sensor.
