What is the U0073 Fault code? What does it stand for?

Fault code “Control module communication bus “A” is off” This code is typically triggered when communication between vehicle’s control modules becomes lost or intermittent. These codes are applicable to fuel-injected engine manufactured after 2004. U0073 means there is a problem in bus A, and U0074 means there is a problem in bus B.

U0073 is a fault code that can be attributed to the CANbus communication protocol. This code can be logged due to communication interruptions of several modules, such as the engine control module/ECM/ECU, transmission control module/TCM, anti-lock brake system (ABS), body control module/BCM) or engine control module/TCM.

The vehicle’s data network links various modules and functions just like the nervous system in the human body. Many tools communicate with one another via more than 40 modules.

The vehicle is equipped with high speed and low speed networks, single-wire and two-wire networks, and modules that serve as translators. They can receive input from many networks and then send it to the appropriate modules.

All new vehicles are exempt from the U0073 fault code. This code is most applicable to vehicles with faster networks called CAN buses with different speeds.

What are the Possible Reasons for the U0073 Fault code?

The possible causes of code U0073 are:

  • – An issue with one or more of the control modules
  • – Open circuit in CAN bus A
  • – Short circuit on the CAN bus “A”.
  • – Circuit problems like bad wiring or poor connections

What are the symptoms of U0073 Fault code?

Common symptoms of the code are:

  • – Illumination at the check engine lights
  • – Engine losing power
  • – High fuel consumption
  • Vehicle not starting
  • – Simultaneous illumination all fault lights on instrument panel
  • Transmission may not shift in 2nd or stay in that gear by default
  • – Door locks are able to be opened and shut by themselves
  • Driver Display – Warning messages could appear

How to Fix the U0073 Fault Code

You might want to review the technical service bulletins that your vehicle has. It could be a manufacturer-related problem.

First, check if you are able to access the error codes. If access is possible, you can check for any additional fault codes. These error codes may be related to any module. You should perform the checks accordingly.

Next, locate all bus connections within your vehicle. Visually inspect the cables and connectors. Check for any signs of melting, peeling, or burn marks on the wires. Take out the connectors and inspect the inside of the terminals. Examine the terminals for any signs of wear, burns, rust. Use an electronic spray and brush to clean the terminals. After it dries, apply dielectric silicon grease to the terminals. Next, connect to the module using the scan tool. Clear all fault codes and then check to see if the code comes back. If it doesn’t, it is fixed.

If communication is not possible or code returns, it is best to unplug each control module individually to establish communication. Before you disconnect any control module connectors, disconnect battery negative. Unplug the module, then reconnect the battery cable. If communication continues to be difficult, contact a trained technician.
