Crank Pulley and Its Function

The crankshaft pulling device is responsible for dampening the engine’s vibrations. It also pulls the drive belts. Each piston in a four-stroke engine has four strokes. The crankshaft accelerates due to the force generated by the pistons falling during ignition. The crankshaft slows down as the pistons move up during compression stroke. A dangerous resonance phenomenon can occur when opposing forces are applied to the crankshaft.

The crankshaft pulling mechanism reduces the high frequency vibrations on the crankshaft. The pulley, made from rubber and metal, has a central hub, an inertia circle, and a rubber-insulator. However, some designs use viscous liquid instead. The crankshaft ends have the center hub bolted to them. The crankshaft rotates and turns and vibrations are absorbed by the rubber ring and inertia rings.

The pulley also has a pulley that can be either integral or bolted to the engine’s drive belt. When the engine runs, the pulley’s belt rotates. This causes engine-powered components such as the alternator, air conditioner compressor, and others to turn. The engine will begin to turn.

The pulley construction may look simple, but it can lead to major engine problems. Rubber material can deteriorate over time. When crankshaft vibrations don’t get dampened, serious engine failures may occur.

A defective pulley can also cause damage to the engine’s drive belt and other components. A pulley that is thrown around and the belt spinning about like a snake can result in damage to engine and body components. It is important to inspect the pulley and change the belt immediately you notice signs of trouble.

Although replacing the crankshaft pulley might seem simple, there are parts like the bumper, front fender and radiator that may need to be taken out to make it easier to install a new one.

What are the symptoms of crankshaft shaft failure?

A common auto part that is overlooked is the crankshaft pullingey. It is easy to forget about the controls and it can lead to serious engine damage. These controls are not meant to be worn out quickly and should be replaced when they do wear out.

 

Engine Vibrations & Yaws

The crankshaft pulley’s job is to dampen vibrations. This causes significant vibration in the engine compartment. The rubber insulator starts to fail and the pulley will begin to separate. This can cause noticeable wobbling when the engine is in use.

 

Unusual sounds

A crankshaft pulley problem can lead to knocking, rattling or squeaking sounds that increase or decrease in frequency with engine speed. Drive belts can make squeaking or skipping sounds, wear out, and cause them to slip.

The crankshaft position sensor is used by the powertrain control module (PCM), to determine the crankshaft rotation speed and position. The CKP sensor monitors a pulley and toothed wheel on the crankshaft. If the pulley is damaged, the sensor will send a false signal to the PCM and it will illuminate the check engine lamp.

 

Visible Wear and Other Damage

If you pay attention, crankshaft pulley wear will be apparent. The rubber ring is exposed to extreme conditions such as heat, cold, chemicals, oil, and vibrations from engines. The naked eye can see cracks and bends in rubber rings.

Electronic ignition systems are now available for modern vehicles. This can cause problems such as poor engine performance or irregular idle speed.
