What does the Transmission Location Sensor do? What are the Transmission Position Sensor malfunction symptoms and what can they do? (Transmission position sensor )….

What is Transmission Position Sensor? What does it do?

It is unsafe to drive an automatic transmission vehicle in other modes than “Park” and “Neutral”. This is because an unexpected movement could cause an accident. The Transmission Position Sensor sends a voltage signal to ECU (on-board computer) about the location of the gearbox. The ECU can control the transmission by sending a voltage signal to the Transmission Position Sensor. The vehicle will start if the gear is set to “Park” or “Neutral”. If the wrong gear is chosen, the ECU stops power to the starter motor and prevents the vehicle from starting.

Note: Transmission Speed Sensor (TSS) is the measurement of the transmission’s rotational speed.

Malfunctions in the Transmission Position Sensor

You may have transmission problems if your Transmission Position Sensor is not working properly. If the sensor is damaged, there are many symptoms.

1- Your Vehicle Doesn’t Start, or Move

The starter will not turn on until the Transmission Position Sensor sends the correct Park/Neutral signal the ECU. If the sensor fails, the vehicle won’t start. The ECU may not know which gear the vehicle is in if the sensor has failed completely. This means the vehicle can’t move.

2-Transmission Shifts to Different Gears from Select

The sensor voltage signal may not match the shift lever. The ECU might not be able to correctly report the selection of gear. The vehicle could start if the gear is in “D” and put your safety at risk. Ask your mechanic to inspect the Transmission Position Sensor if you are having trouble with gear pairings.

3-Vehicles Can Enter Emergency mode (Limp Mode).

Some vehicles can shift manually into gear even if the Transmission position sensor fails. The ECU can’t know what gear the vehicle is in. The ECU will turn on the Limp Mode malfunction lamp and protect the engine and transmission from damage. Depending on the manufacturer, Limp Mode could be either 3rd, 4th or 5th gears, or reverse. You can have the transmission lock in one of these modes. You can drive the vehicle until it is repaired.

Verification of the Transmission Position Sensor

1- Park the vehicle and shift into “Park”. If the engine is starting, shift to the “D”. The sensor may be defective if the transmission doesn’t shift into gear.

2- Stop the engine, and move the gear knob to the “D” position. Then try to start it. If the vehicle doesn’t start, it is likely that the sensor is defective.
