Frank Marugg developed this system as a security-oriented system in 1944. It was patentable by him in 1958.

It is now standardised in developing world circumstances. It was made compulsory for the use of the state in England by 1997. Over time, the immobilizer system was standardized in other countries. This system is still used today in all new vehicles.

How does the immobilizer work?

Special keys and ignition are required for cars that use the immobilizer system. A main unit is hidden under the hood. This prevents fuel from going to the engine and the ignition system triggering the sparkplugs in the case of key mismatch. This makes it possible to avoid the classic car driving experience of making straight contact. When the special chip in the key of the system is inserted into the ignition it sends an electrical signal to the main unit, creating a magnetic field. The magnetic field creates a magnetic field and charges the key chip. It then transmits the encrypted code to the receiver using radio frequencies. If the code is correct the receiver will trigger the starter, distributor, and fuel pump.

 

This process takes place in milliseconds from the moment the key is inserted into an ignition. The ignition does not become disengaged when the key has been removed. The key must be removed from the ignition for 20 seconds. The immobilizer system won’t be activated if you try to start the car again after this. 20sec. All security elements in the immobilizer are activated when it’s full.

However, this system, which has a 75% average reduction in automobile theft according to all global data, also has some weaknesses. It can be disabled by simply opening the hood and removing the main immobilizer unit. It is not enough to rely on the immobilizer. At this time, auto alarm systems have been at the forefront in security enhancements. Technology has made it more difficult to disable and access immobilizers.

The immobilizer system was originally used in expensive, high-end cars in the past. However, it is now available for all vehicles at very low levels and has been put on the marketplace. Losing the key is one of the biggest problems with this system. Many users are affected by high costs and find it difficult to obtain a new key.
