What is ESP? What is the Electronic Stability Program? What does the ESP system do in cars?

ABS, ASR, ESP! Now, these abbreviations catch your eye in most places, don't they? Sometimes they appear in the back seat of a car, and sometimes in magazines, newspapers, or brochures. Driving safety is what you will think of the moment you hear ESP. It’s a system that keeps your car on the road and prevents it skidding. This is very helpful for drivers.

Bosch developed ESP, a driving aid unit that is used in automobiles. Electronic Stability Program was offered as an option by Mercedes-Benz to CL models in 1995.

This is the logic of the system, which has different names in different companies.

A central control unit assesses the data from the ABS braking systems sensors, torque sensors, steering angle sensors, and other sensors and determines if the vehicle has been slipping or skidding. The central control unit attempts to get the vehicle in alignment by braking the required wheels and interfering the with the engine power.

If the vehicle is swerving ahead, the rear tire that remains in the bend is braking independently. If the vehicle is swerving from the side, the brakes are applied to the front wheel that is outside the bend. The vehicle will be re-aligned.
