What is the P0009 Fault code?

Fault code P0009 refers to the engine’s mechanical timing. Fault code P0009 is triggered if the Engine Control Module (ECU/ECM/PCM) detects a misalignment between the crankshaft and camshaft in row 2 of the engine where the 2nd Cylinder is located. The engine control module uses sensors and compares the result to a reference number. If the engine control module detects that the crankshaft or camshaft(s), are out of alignment, it will emit this fault code.

The most common fault code for vehicles is P0009 and includes various Chevrolet models, GM, GMC Cadillac, Buick Holden, Suzuki, Holden, Holden, and GM.

What are the Symptoms of P0009 Fault Code?

Fault code P0009 refers to improper timing of the engine. It causes the engine’s to run irregularly. These are some of the most prominent symptoms:

  • – Engine fault light illuminates
  • Vehicle is acting strangely, especially when it is accelerating
  • – Idle irregularity
  • – An increase of fuel consumption
  • – Reduced engine performance and power
  • – Engine / timing chain making clicking and rattling sound
  • – Engine is not running

What causes the P0009 Fault code?

A P0009 fault code is usually triggered by a timing chain problem. Here are some reasons:

  • Engine timing out of sync
  • – A loose and extended timing chain
  • – Defective timing chain tensioner
  • – Wear timing gears and guides
  • – Defective crankshaft or camshaft sensor
  • – A defective or displaced crankshaft relay wheel
  • – Cable damage
  • – Low engine oil
  • – Defective variable time actuator (phaser).
  • Defective variable timing solenoid (oil control)
  • – A faulty or obsolete engine control unit (ECU/ECM / PCM), can occasionally be a problem.

Notice: Fault symptoms can differ if the fault occurs in the engine control module.

How to Fix the P0009 Fault Code

  • – Visually inspect the tensioner and timing chain for wear, elongation, or misalignment.
  • To ensure the correct position of the crankshaft reluctor wheels, it must be inspected.
  • – Defective or damaged parts must be replaced
  • – To see if the check engine lights come on, reset your code and start the engine.
  • – The engine control unit may be at fault if there are no broken parts or the problem has not been resolved. The ECU may be defective if there are no symptoms of malfunction as we have described above, other than the malfunction lamp.

This fault can also be identified by the codes P0008,P0011,P0012, P0013, and many other codes.

How Serious Is the P0009 Fault Code

You will have poor engine performance if the P0009 fault code not addressed immediately. The vehicle stops running at idle. Engine power and fuel consumption increase, while engine power decreases dramatically. It causes engine damage by causing internal engine parts to degrade over time.
