What is Body Control Modul (BCM)?
Modern cars are equipped with complex communication networks to provide safety and comfort. This network is made up of a number of terminals, cables and sensors that relay data to computer module. Each vehicle’s vital systems have a computerized control unit. The Body Control Module (also known as “The Controller”) is one of these modules. Body “Control Module” Or “Body Computer” .
The area in which cargo and passengers are transported is known as the “body” . The body control module (BCM), an electronic computer, is responsible for controlling and operating different functions of the vehicle’s body.
The process that the BCM oversees may differ depending on the vehicle model. BCM oversees the following: Interior and exterior lighting; Heating and air conditioning system; Heated seats; Power windows and mirrors; Central locking system; Anti-theft System and other electronic accessories.
The vehicle’s main computer is less burdened by the separate module that controls all of these systems. The body control module communicates via the bus with other onboard computer, allowing vital system to run more efficiently.
Where can I find the Body Control Module
The BCM is found under the instrument cluster on most vehicles. This is the standard location for most vehicles, and most modules installed in this area are located near it. The exact position of the BCM on each vehicle’s driver/passenger side may vary depending upon the model. To access the BCM, in some cases it may be necessary for the instrument panel to be removed and the surrounding trim to be partially removed.
What are the symptoms of a Body Control Module failure?
The BCM may fail, which is rare but can cause serious problems. Sometimes, a malfunctioning BCM will cause warning signs to the driver. These are the most common symptoms of a malfunction:
- Interference can lead to the battery dying within hours if there is a problem with the trunk control module. It continues to provide power to certain accessories even when the ignition switch is turned off.
- – A defective BCM may cause intermittent and erratic operation in various electronic components like instrument panel dials and door locks. If multiple components exhibit inconsistent behavior, you may suspect BCM.
- BCM is responsible the vehicle’s security systems. Keyless entry, anti theft security system, immobilizer and others. An inconsistent or strange behavior with systems can be attributed to a defective BCM.
- A bad BCM can lead to all warning lamps on an instrument cluster being lit simultaneously. It can also cause dials to behave inconsistently or stop working altogether. This happens when the vehicle is unable to communicate with other modules or its host.
- If your vehicle seems to lose balance or stutter while you are driving at high speeds, it may be that the BCM is not transmitting or synchronizing its various systems. Acceleration can also cause a loss in power.
- A damaged trunk control module could also stop the vehicle from starting. It may not recognize the key chip, and the starter might not engage in rare cases. Problems with startup can also arise from a lack of communication between control modules.
It is theoretically possible to drive a vehicle with a malfunctioning BCM, but it is highly discouraged. We cannot predict what type of behavior the vehicle might exhibit or which functions will be working as intended. There is no way to be certain that the lights of your vehicle will turn on when you want them. This could pose a safety risk to both the driver of the vehicle and passengers.
Sometimes, it may be possible to reset the BCM to restore complete functionality in certain cases. Resetting the BCM will not solve problems with electrical circuits. This is because it depends on how all circuits are functioning. You may have to reset the BCM differently depending on your vehicle’s make and model. Each vehicle has its own procedure for the reset, but it usually takes only a short time to turn off the power to the BCM. It is usually enough to disconnect the vehicle’s battery, or remove a special fuse, to reset it.
Before you reset the body control module, make sure to consult your vehicle’s specific service manual. If you don’t, the module could be damaged.
