What is the P0004 Fault Code? What does it signify?
Modern vehicles come with fuel systems that improve the combustion process. Common Rail diesel engines (CRD) have a high-pressure pump that adjusts fuel pressure to the injectors. The fuel flow to the high-pressure pump is controlled by a computer-controlled fuel volume regulator.
CRD engines allow fuel to be injected directly into the combustion chamber. This increases fuel efficiency and reduces exhaust emissions. This system allows for the control of both fuel injection timing and injection timing. The same technology works in gasoline direct injection engines (GDI).
The P0004 fault code, although not common, is often seen in engines that use GDI and CRD technology. This code can be caused by the electrical circuit connecting to the fuel volume regulator.
The fuel volume regulator regulates the fuel pressure to be sent to an engine. The fuel pressure must be within the correct range to allow injectors proper operation. The powertrain controller module (PCM), regulates fuel volume, pressure, and controls the on/off of the fuel volume regulator solenoid. If the voltage signal from fuel volume regulator exceeds expectations, the PCM will set fault code P0004.
Similar fault codes include P0001, P0002 or P0003.
What is the P0004 Fault Code?
- – Defective fuel volume regulator
- – Defective fuel volume regulator solenoid
- – Circuit problems like loose connections or damaged wiring
- – Defective fuel shutoff valve
- – Corrosion and loose connections at connector for fuel pressure sensor
- – Short circuit in the sensor wires to PCM
- – A PCM that is not working or requires a software upgrade
What are the symptoms for the P0004 fault code?
- – Illumination for the check engine light
- – The vehicle is not starting at all or it starts very hard
- – Reduced engine power and performance
- – The vehicle can be put in fail-safe mode by the PCM (Limp Mode).
- Engine stalling
- – Increased fuel use
- The engine may continue to run if the fuel shutoff valve is defective.
How do I fix the P0004 fault code?
- – To ensure that your code is clear, you should first run a road test to check if it comes back.
- Fault code P0004 should be reported. Wiring, fuses, and connections should then be checked and repaired.
- – Replacing fuel volume regulator solenoid
- If it is defective, the fuel volume regulator’s voltage signal should be checked and replaced.
- If the voltage signal from the fuel pressure sensor is not working, it should be replaced.
- – Repairing a defective fuel shutoff valve
How Serious Is the P0004 Fault Code
Permanent damage to your engine can be caused by the P0004 fault code. It will also cause fuel imbalance. The fault can lead to costly repairs like the replacement of the catalytic convertor if not dealt with promptly. This is why it’s important to fix it as soon as possible.
