What is the P0014 Fault code?
P0014 refers to a camshaft variable timing-related malfunction code. A code P0014 will be generated if the engine control module ECM / PCM/ ECU detects an issue with timing of the exhaust camshaft, valves or other components. This happens on OBD II equipped vehicles with VVT technology. It can happen to Toyota, VW and Honda as well as Chevrolet, Hyundai, Audi and Acura.
VVT (Variable Vave Timing/Variable Valve Timothying) and VCT (Variable Cam Timing/Variable Camshaft Timing), improve fuel economy and engine performance. They regulate when the intake or exhaust valves open/close. The ECM controls the camshaft(s), using the oil control valve(s), also known as variable valve timing control solenoid vales.
The camshaft timing is the subject of the P0014 code. If the camshaft timing goes beyond a predetermined limit (too high), then the code will be set. The check engine light will also illuminate. Bank 1 refers the engine side where cylinder 1 is found. “B” camshaft indicates “exhaust”, “right” or “rear” camshaft.
What causes the P0014 Faultcode?
- – Oily or missing engine oil
- – Engine oil at a low level
- – Oil flow restriction to/from camshaft phasers (actuator), due to excessive oil flow or incorrect oil viscosity
- – Incorrect camshaft timing
- – Solenoid for valve control solenoid defective or open
- – Damaged or defective solenoid valve control system wiring
- Faulty engine controller unit
What are the symptoms for P0014 Fault Code
- – The engine light should be on
- If the camshaft limit exceeds its maximum value, the engine could run rough.
- – Fuel consumption could increase
- – Stalling, misfire, and idle fluctuation
- Vehicle emissions tests fail
- – Clicking/knocking the engine
Notice: Vehicle symptoms can vary depending on camshaft position.
How do I fix the P0014 Fault code?
- Fault codes must be cleared and road tested in order to see if they return.
- It is important to check the engine oil level and condition. It is important to use the right oil for your engine. The oil filter should be changed.
- Repair and replacement of the wiring for the bank 1 exhaust camshaft oil valve (OCV).
- – You must replace the bank 1 exhaust camshaft oil control val (OCV).
- – The timing chain, camshaft phasers (actuator), and timing chain must be replaced or repaired as per the service manual.
Notice: The code may be caused by camshaft timing chain guide wear or skipped timing as a result of tensioner failure.
How Serious Is the P0014 Fault Coding?
Important: The P0014 fault codes are very important. Your engine could run erratically or stall, or it may be having trouble starting. Fuel consumption can increase. Carbon deposits can develop on the pistons and valves of an engine. Incorrect camshaft timing or long-term use can cause the timing chain jump and the valves to contact the piston.
