What is P0020 fault code and what does it mean? What is the Camshaft Position A Actuator Circuit Malfunction, Bank 2? How can you fix P0020 fault codes? What are the causes and symptoms of the P0020 fault?

What is the P0020 fault code? What does it all mean?

The fault code P0020 is set by the powertrain control module (PCM), when the voltage signal from VVT circuit is out-of-spec for a specified period. Bank 2 is the engine side that does not have cylinder #1. “A” indicates the intake camshaft. This code is nearly identical to P0010.

Variable timing is a technology in an engine that can achieve higher power and/or efficiency when operating at different points. The system is composed of one or more camshaft actuators and solenoid vas, also known under the name oil control valves.

The PCM monitors variable valve timing circuit voltage for high or low voltage. The test fails if the voltage signal is below the manufacturer’s range for a given time.

What causes the P0020 Fault code?

  • – Defective variable timing actuator
  • – Defective VVT oil control valve
  • – Broken wires, broken connections, open circuits or short circuits in the VVT oil control valve circuit
  • – A PCM that is not working or requires software updates

What are the symptoms for P0020’s Fault Code?

  • – Illumination for the check engine light
  • – Loud operation of the engine
  • – Low engine performance, especially at high revs
  • – Increased fuel consumption
  • – The OCV may be short-circuited and the engine might run hard
  • Engine could stall or hesitate

How to Fix the P0020 Fault Code

  • Ensure that your engine oil is of the correct viscosity.
  • – In bank 2, check the wiring and connections of the oil control valve solenoid circuit. If there are any problems or loose connections, repair them.
  • Use an ohmmeter to check the solenoid resistance. Replace it if the resistor is not within specification.
  • – Turn off the engine and remove the oil flow valve. Then, test the solenoid. If the solenoid does not move, the unit may be defective and must be repaired.
  • – Look for a short or open wire between the solenoid of the oil flow control valve and the PCM.
  • You can use a scanner to inspect the condition of the VVT control valve. It should normally be ON at high engine speeds and OFF at idle.

How Serious Is the P0020 Fault Coding?

Driving comfort is affected by the P0020 fault code. Carbon can buildup on the piston rings and valves if repairs are not done quickly. The engine’s performance and fuel consumption can increase. It is important to fix the problem as soon as possible.
