What is the P0031 Fault code? What does it stand for?
If the powertrain controller module (PCM), detects that the current and desired states of the oxygen heater control circuit do differ, a P0031 code is stored.
This fault code refers to the oxygen sensor, also known as the upstream sensor. It is located in front the catalytic converter in the row of 1st cylinder. This sensor measures the oxygen content of the exhaust gas and compares it to the outside air. These data are sent to the PCM to adjust the air/fuel ratio.
For accurate readings of oxygen sensors, they must be operated at a temperature that is within the specified range. The PCM controls the heater part of the sensor and adjusts the temperature as necessary. The fault code P0031 is set by the PCM if it detects an abnormally low voltage or a defective heater component.

- The most common cause is damage to the cables from excessive heat. It is important to inspect the cables as well as the voltage signal to sensors. Cables should be replaced if damaged. Loose connections should be repaired. They should be replaced if the connectors are showing signs of corrosion.
- Test the heater part of the sensor. The 12V battery supply should be checked. If the voltage is not present, the fuse on the heater component must be checked and replaced if it has blown. The wiring must be replaced if it is damaged or open.
- If the battery supply is stable, it should be tested for resistance by disconnecting the ground cable from the PCM. Repair any circuit cracks if infinite resistance is found.
- If all seems normal, you can replace the O2 sensor.
