What is P0045 fault code and what does it mean? What is Turbo/Supercharge-Boost Control A Circuit Open? How do you fix the P0045 fault code What are the causes and symptoms of the P0045 error code?

What is the P0045 fault code? What does it stand for?

When the powertrain control module (PCM), detects a potential opening in the turbocharger, supercharger boost controller solenoid (or VGTactuator), or circuit, a code P0045 will be triggered. This code is usually a fault in the circuit “A”, and not a faulty component.

Superchargers and turbochargers use air induction to force air into your engine. This increases engine power. A variable geometry turbocharger is a common feature in modern vehicles. VGT systems have adjustable fins that can open and close to alter the boost pressure. These blades can be moved by the PCM via an electronic actuator. To determine the position of turbo blades, a special position sensor is used.

For superchargers or conventional turbochargers, vehicles are equipped with a bypass or wastegate to regulate the boost. The modern wastegate is controlled by a PCM-controlled boost controller solenoid. You can open the wastegate to relieve the boost pressure. This is done by the PCM, which uses a boost-pressure sensor.

Whether your vehicle is equipped with a VGT or a conventional turbocharger/supercharger system, fault code P0045 will be triggered when a problem occurs in your boost control circuit.

What is the P0045 Fault Code and Why Does It Happen?

The following are possible triggers for the P0045 error message:

  • Vacuum leaks in intake manifold
  • – Dirty Air Filter
  • – Wastegate locked in open or closed position
  • – Defective intercooler
  • – A loose connection between turbocharger & exhaust manifold
  • – A loose connection between turbocharger & intake pipe
  • – Defective boost sensor (or turbocharger positioning sensor)
  • – Defective control solenoid
  • – Open or short wiring in the boost sensor circuit
  • – Connectors for the 5 volt reference circuit that powers the boost sensor are loose, corroded, and disconnected.
  • – Turbo failure is often caused by oil supply and internal oil leaks

What are the symptoms for P0045 fault code?

These are the most common symptoms associated with this error code:

  • – Illumination for the check engine light
  • – Insufficient boost causes poor engine performance
  • Overloading can cause engine damage and kickback.

How do I fix the P0045 fault code?

You can begin diagnostics by taking a look at the turbo control unit. Check for loose connections, damaged cables and vacuum leaks. Check to see if it’s there.

  • – Test to determine if turbo pressure is normal.
  • Repair of cracked, damaged or loose hoses
  • – Repairing broken wires and loose connections to boost sensor and solenoid
  • – Repairing and cleaning turbo oil leaks
  • – Replacement and testing of wastegate circuits and bypass valves
  • – Replacing the defective control solenoid
  • – Replacing a defective turbo pressure sensor

How Serious Is the P0045 Fault Coding?

Fault code P0045 can be a serious code and should be fixed as soon as possible. In some cases, problems with the turbocharger/supercharger can cause serious engine damage. Vehicles will behave abnormally, including kickback, rich fuel consumption or lean fuel consumption as well as under or over boost conditions. It is important to address this code immediately.
