What is the P0096 fault code What is the description for the Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2, Circuit Range/Performance problem? How can I fix P0096 fault code What are the causes and symptoms of the P0096 error code?
What is the P0096 fault code? What does it signify?
If the powertrain controller module (PCM), detects that voltage signals from the intake air temperature sensor (IAT) circuit #2 are not operating within the specified range, or if they vary significantly over a short time, P0096 will trigger.
The IAT sensor (intake air temp) is a thermistor which measures the temperature of air by measuring resistance in the air. It is usually a 2-wire sensor found in the intake duct. It can be mounted on the intake manifold in some cases. The one wire is used to receive a reference signal of 5 volts from the PCM, and the other for ground.
The resistance changes as the engine draws air into it. This resistance change affects the 5 Volt signal that is supplied to the sensor. Cold air has high resistance and high signal voltage, while hot air has low resistance but high signal voltage. The PCM monitors the change in the reference signal to calculate the air temperature. If the PCM detects a voltage sign outside the normal operating range of sensor #2, a P0096 malfunction code is issued.
There are many models of Ford and Mazda that are susceptible to the P0096 fault code.
What is the P0096 Fault Code?
There are several possible triggers to the P0096 fault codes:
- – Sensor 2 – Defective intake temperature (IAT),
- – Problems with wiring that cause an open circuit in the sensor system
- – Connectors and wires that connect to the PCM can be either open or closed circuit
- – Unplugged IAT sensor
- – Defective PCM
What are the symptoms of the P0096 Fault code?
You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has a P0096 code:
- – Illumination at the check engine lights
- – Increased fuel consumption
- Low engine performance
- – Engine hesitation during acceleration
- Depending on the temperature outside, the engine can be run in either rich or lean conditions.
- Carbon buildup can occur if you drive the vehicle in this manner for long periods of time.
How to Fix the P0096 Fault Code
To determine if the code is returning, it’s important to first clear all codes. Then, a road test should also be performed. If the code comes back, it is important to inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connections that connect to the intake air temperature sensor.
One IAT sensor may be present on several vehicles. IAT1 or IAT1 are used to measure air temperature to the MAF sensor. IAT2 measures the temperature of the air just after the compressor. It is imperative to verify that all components are in good condition so as not to make a mistake.
- – Test and replace the #2 sensor for intake air temperature
- Repair of damage to cables and connectors to sensor circuits
- Repairing open and short circuits in wires to the PCM
- – Replace the PCM if it fails to pass the testing procedures
