What is the fault code P0220? What is Throttle/Accelerator Position Sensor/Switch C Circuit Malfunction? How do I fix the P0220 fault code What are the causes and symptoms of the P0220 fault codes?

What is the P0220 fault code? What does it signify?

If there is a deviation from manufacturer specifications in the powertrain controller module (PCM), a P0220 code is issued.

A potentiometer is mounted on the throttle body to monitor the throttle position (TPS). It monitors the flap opening of your throttle and sends a voltage signal back to the PCM. It usually has three wires. One wire is used to receive the 5 volt reference signal of the PCM. The second wire is for the return signal and the third is for ground.

When the throttle is fully opened, the voltage signal is approximately 0.45 volts. The voltage signal is close to 0.45 volts when the throttle is fully opened. It approaches 5 V. Code P0220 will be activated if the PCM detects voltage signals outside its normal operating range. This code can be hidden if the voltage or resistance deviation exceeds 10% in most cases. The code’s description includes the letter B, which refers to a particular circuit or sensor.

Note: Comparing PCM, TPS and MAP sensor signals for some models. If it detects a substantial change in throttle position it expects the manifold to respond. Code P0220 can also be used if there is a conflict between the two sensors.

What causes the P0220 Fault code?

Here are some reasons why P0220 should be set:

  • – Tight connections or damaged wires in the throttle components.
  • – Wearing, defective throttle body
  • – Defective throttle position sensor
  • – Defective accelerator pedal position sensor
  • – The throttle plate is not moving because of carbon deposits in the throttle body
  • – Missaligned accelerator pedal sensor or throttle position sensor
  • – Defective PCM (rarely)

What are the symptoms of the P0220 Fault code?

These symptoms may be present in vehicles with code P0220.

  • – Illumination at the check engine lights
  • – Bad performance during acceleration
  • – Engine misfires at idle or while driving
  • Engine stalling
  • – The engine may not start, but the starter may be able to get it started
  • – The engine could run hard
  • – Idle Speed Variations
  • – The exhaust pipe emits black smoke during operation

How to Fix the P0220 Fault Code

There are several repairs that can resolve the P0220 fault code.

  • – Replacing throttle position sensor
  • – Replacing the accelerator pedal position sensor
  • – Replacing throttle body
  • – Repair or replacement wiring for the throttle electrical system
  • Repair of damaged wires, connectors for throttle / pedal position sensor
  • – Adjusting the throttle position sensor and accelerator pedal position sensor to the correct positions
  • – Reprogramming or replacing the PCM

Regular maintenance is a smart idea. Regular maintenance will prevent cable and connector damage, and help you to detect problems early.
