What is the P0321 fault code What is the description for the Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input Range / Performance problem? How can I fix P0321 fault code What are the symptoms and causes for the P0321 fault code
What is the P0321 Fault code? What does it all mean?
The crankshaft position sensor (CKP), tells the powertrain controller module (PCM), the crankshaft’s position and the speed at which the shaft is spinning. This information is used to control engine speed (RPM), ignition timings, and fuel delivery. Camshaft position sensor (CMP), informs the PCM when the intake and exhaust valves are to be opened and closed. Depending on the way the manufacturer programmed the PCM to trigger fault code P0321, an electrical fault in either one of these sensor circuits will cause it to go off. The PCM receives a voltage signal from sensors that is irregular, intermittent, unreasonable or out of the expected parameters.
P0321 fault codes can be found on vehicles made by Ford, Audi and Mazda.
What causes the P0321 Fault code?
The following are the most frequent causes of the P0321 fault code:
- – Defective crankshaft position sensor
- – Defective camshaft position sensor
- – Defective engine speed sensor
- Damaged crankshaft, camshaft, or reluctor wheel
- – Damaged, melted, broken wires, loose connectors causing short circuit in sensors
- – Defective PCM
What are the symptoms for P0321 Malfunction Codes?
You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P0321:
- – Illumination for check engine light
- – The engine won’t start, or the starter doesn’t work when it is pressed.
- – Engine misfire and irregularly running
- – Engine hesitation / stumbling during acceleration
- Engine stalling
How do I fix the P0321 fault code?
There are several repairs that can resolve the P0321 fault code.
- – Replacing crankshaft position sensor
- – Replacing damaged, shorted, or corrosion crankshaft position sensor wiring/connector
- – Replacing camshaft position sensor
- – Replacing worn, shorted or damaged camshaft position sensor wiring.
- – Replacing engine speed sensor
- – Replacing the engine speed sensor wiring.
- If possible, reprogram or replace the PCM.
How serious is the P0321 Fault code?
P0321 is considered moderately severe. The code is considered moderately serious if the check engine light illuminates with it but there are no other symptoms. Drivers can safely drive the vehicle. An engine speed sensor problem can cause an engine to stop or stall. The engine can also run rough, jerky, or misfire. Engine components can become seriously damaged if you ignore it for too long and drive the vehicle as usual.
