What is the P0444 Fault Code?”
The P0444 code means that an issue has been identified in the Evaporative Emissions Control System (EVAP). The EVAP system’s task is to stop the release of fuel vapors in the atmosphere. Fuel vapors captured are kept in the canister and sent to the engine via vacuum line to be burned as part a mixture of air/fuel. Fuel vapors are not sent to engines when there is an increase in fuel demand or when the vapor pressure of the EVAP system exceeds preset levels.
The powertrain control module (PCM) controls the purge valve. It opens when conditions permit and sends fuelvapors to the engine. The PCM monitors the circuit and drain control valve constantly. If the PCM finds that the voltage signal of the drain control valve is not changing or does not match manufacturer’s specifications, it will issue a P0444 Code.
Typically, the EVAP system consists in the fuel tank, fuel filler caps, fuel lines, vacuum line, canister canisters, various pressure and flow sensors and control solenoids.
What are the possible causes of the P0444 Fault code?
Below are some reasons to set fault code P0444:
- – Defective relief valve
- – Worn, burnt, shorted, corroded or damaged wiring and/or connections
- – Open circuits
- – There may be a problem with some components of the EVAP System
- – In rare cases, defective engine control module
What are the symptoms for P0444 fault code?
These symptoms may be present in vehicles with code P0444.
- Illumination of the check engine light
- If the relief valve is left open, the idle quality can deteriorate. The engine might run unevenly at certain throttle settings or stall unexpectedly.
- – Slightly higher fuel consumption
- – A “puffing” sound when the fuel tank cap has been opened due to excess pressure
- – Strong fuel smell
How to Fix the P0444 Fault Code
Sometimes, the problem is not with the EVAP but in a vacuum leak somewhere else. A loosely fitted fuel cap can also lead to code P0444 symptoms. Parts of EVAP can sometimes be replaced without purpose. You can limit the possibility of problems by checking the fuel cap and vacuum lines before you start.
- – Before any repairs are made to the EVAP system, it should be thoroughly inspected.
- – Cables and connectors must not be frayed, damaged or worn out.
- – The EVAP system’s components must be repaired or replaced.
- To avoid costly replacements, the system should be tested again after every repair.
- – Replacement and testing of the relief valve
How serious is the P0444 Fault code?
P0444 by itself is not a problem. It is often associated with other codes that are related to the EVAP. It is important to immediately address any problem with vehicle’s system pressure. The EVAP system is primarily designed to reduce vehicle emissions. An EVAP that isn’t working correctly will cause your car to be less environmentally-friendly.
