What is P0554 fault code and why does it matter? What can be the reason for Power Steering Pressure Sensor Circuit Intermittent fault? How can I fix the P0554 fault code What are the causes and symptoms of the P0554 error code?
What is the P0554 fault code? What does it all mean?
If the powertrain control module, PCM detects that voltage signal from power steering pressure sensor circuit exceeds the manufacturer’s programed range or if the voltage signal is intermittent, a code P0554 will trigger. This problem is most common at low speeds. The check engine light will be triggered. The check engine light must be activated if the fault occurs on more than one occasion in order for it to work.
Before electrically and hydraulically assisted steering systems were developed, manufacturers used rack and pin steering systems. These systems were inefficient and laborious, making steering the vehicle at low speeds very difficult. This is why power steering was invented.
What is the P0554 Fault Code and Why Does It Happen?
These are the most common reasons that P0554 is triggered
- – Damaged or melted wires, snapped, corroded, shorted or open wires, and/or loose, corrosion-prone connectors to power steering pressure sensor
- – A blown fuse/faulty relay
- – Use low or no power steering fluid
- – Power steering fluid not according to specification
- Fluid leaks in the power steering systems
- – Defective pressure sensor/switch for power steering
- – A defective power steering pump
- – Worn or defective rack or pinion gears
- – Faulty PCM and other control modules (rarely).
What are the symptoms of P0554 malfunction code?
You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P0554:
- – Illumination for the check engine light
- – Power steering fluid leaks
- When the engine speed is low, the engine could stall.
- Hydraulic assistance can be lost at low speeds, and it may become difficult to turn the steering column.
- – An increase in fuel consumption
- – Uneven idle speed
- – Wistling, moaning, and knocking sounds coming from the power steering
How do I fix the P0554 fault code?
It is common to mistakenly believe that the engine is stalling at low speeds while you drive and turn. The main problem lies with either the power steering pressure sensor circuit of the power steering systems.
There are several repairs that can resolve the P0554 fault code.
- – Topping up and checking the power steering fluid
- – Replacing contaminated or incorrect power steering fluid
- Repair damaged, snapped or corroded cables or connectors to PSP sensors
- – Test and, if needed, replace the power steering pump
- Repairing power steering fluid leaking
- – Replacing a blown fuse, or faulty relay
- – Inspect the rack and pinion gears, and replace them if necessary
- Repairing a damaged power steering pressure sensor
- – Test the PCM and replace it if necessary
How serious is the P0554 Fault code?
A vehicle with fault code P0554 can experience severe problems, such as loss of hydraulic support or the vehicle becoming manual. Manual steering can be difficult for novice drivers. These codes can cause vehicles to stop at low speeds. It is important to address the problem as soon as possible and get it fixed as soon as possible.
