What is the P06B8 Fault code? What does it mean?
Fault code P06B8 is an acronym “Internal control module persistent random access memory (NVRAM) fault” . This code is a sign that there is a problem in the NVRAM of the powertrain control module. NVRAM is memory in which data is stored and maintained even if power is cut to the PCM. If the PCM detects a problem within the NVRAM process, fault code P06B8 can be set.
The PCM and associated control modules monitor the NVRAM inputs and outputs constantly. NVRAM is also interacted with by the transmission control module, traction control module (TCM), and other controllers. NVRAM is used in automotive applications to preserve data memory during power outages to the PCM. NVRAM can be integrated into the PCM. NVRAM can handle over 1,000,000 programming changes and is built to last for hundreds and years. However it can be sensitive and fragile to extreme heat or humidity.
The NVRAM self tests are started every time the PCM or ignition is turned on. In addition to running internal self-tests for controllers, the controller area networking (CAN) also compares the signals from each of the modules to verify that each controller works properly. These tests can be performed simultaneously.
The PCM will detect an internal problem in the NVRAM process and will save a P06B8 number. If this happens, the check engine lamp will light up. Sometimes, it may take several fault cycles before the check engine light illuminates.
P06B8 fault codes can be found on vehicles of all makes and models, including those made by Ford, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-Benz, Subaru, and others.
