What is P0717 fault code? What is the description for Input/Turbine Shaft speed Sensor A Circuit No Signal Malfunction? How can I fix P0717 fault code What are the causes and symptoms of the P0717 error code?

What is the P0717 Fault code? What does it signify?

The input shaft sensor (sometimes called the turbo shaft speed sensor), is responsible to monitor the transmission input speed. Both sensors, despite their names, are nearly identical in design and serve the exact same purpose. It is an electromagnetic 3-wire sensor. It is typically mounted to the transmission housing with a bolt/stud. It is located at the rear of clutch housing near the transmission input shaft.

A special reluctor wheel is attached to the input shaft of the gearbox. The engine RPMs are transferred to the transmission through the reluctor wheel. It rotates around the sensor and passes close to the tip. An electromagnetic field is created by the wheel’s rotation. The electronic wave is created when the sensor detects the notched or grooved areas. These electromagnetic waves can be interpreted by either the powertrain control module or transmission control module. PCM calculates RPM speed by comparing transmission input/turbine shaft speeds, engine RPM, engine load and transmission output shaft speeds.

If it does not receive a signal, such as from the input/turbine speed sensor, or if the signal quality is poor, then the PCM will set code P0717.

What causes the P0717 Fault code?

  • – Defective input/turbine shaft speed sensor
  • – The speed sensor circuit is not working properly (e.g., loose or damaged connections or wires).
  • – One or several faulty shift solenoids
  • Transmission oil that is not clean
  • – Defective engine coolant temperature sensor
  • – An issue with the powertrain controller module or transmission control modules

What are the symptoms of P0717 Malfunction Code?

  • – Illumination at the check engine lights
  • Gear changes may be sudden, abrupt, or slow.
  • – Increased fuel consumption
  • – Engine stuttering while going from high to low speed
  • – Engine stops at idle
  • – Operating speedometer or odometer that is not operating, but fluctuating.
  • – The vehicle is put into safe/failure.

How to Fix the P0717 Fault Code

The cause of the malfunction can have a different repair method. These are the most common fixes for code P0717.

  • – Replacing your valve body
  • – Replacing/replacing the turbine speed sensor
  • – Replacing one, or more shift solenoids
  • – Repair or replacement of damaged, shorted or open wiring or circuits
  • – Replacing engine coolant temperature sensor
  • – Draining, flushing and changing transmission fluid

How Serious Is the P0717 Fault Coding?

P0717 fault code can lead to serious driving problems. Although the vehicle may initially start, it can cause dangerous situations like stalling in traffic or incorrect gear shifting. It is important to fix the P0717 fault code immediately.
