What is P0782 fault code and how does it work? What is 2-3 Shift Malfunction? How do you fix the P0782 fault? What are the causes and symptoms of the P0782 error code?

What is the P0782 fault code? What does it all mean?

2-to-3 shift solenoids control the activation of the hydraulic circuits in electronic controlled automatic transmissions. They activate the clutches or bands. The powertrain control module (PCM), and the transmission control module, (TCM) control the shift solenoids. Fault code P0782 will be set if the PCM detects an electrical or mechanical problem with the 2-3 shift function.

The image below shows where the shift solenoids are found in an automatic transmission.

What is the P0782 Fault Code?

If the desired gear ratio is not in sync with the detected, the PCM records fault code PF0782 and illuminates engine fault lamp. In rare cases, the check engine light may come on after multiple faults.

Below are some reasons to set fault code P0782:

  • – Defective 2-3 shift solenoids
  • – Clogged transmission fluid passagelines
  • – Internal transmission failures
  • – Low transmission oil
  • – Filtering and oil contamination in transmission oil
  • – The shift solenoid wiring harness can either be open or closed.
  • – A poor electrical connection in shift solenoid circuit
  • – Connectors and cables that are damaged
  • – Defective transmission pump
  • Defective hydraulic control device
  • – Defective TCM or PCM (rarely).

What are the symptoms of P0782 Malfunction Code?

You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P0782:

  • Illumination of the check engine light
  • – Difficulty shifting gears
  • – The vehicle cannot shift from 2nd to 3rd gear.
  • Gearbox slipping
  • Overheating the gearbox can cause burning odors
  • – An increase in fuel consumption
  • – Irregularity of idle speed
  • – Vehicle stops moving at idle
  • – Vehicle hesitation during acceleration
  • – Other fault codes for shift solenoids
  • – The vehicle enters failsafe mode, which allows one gear.

How to Fix the P0782 Fault Code

The following repairs may be able to resolve the P0782 fault code:

  • – Replacing a 2nd shift solenoid that is defective
  • – Flushing of transmission fluid lines
  • – Fill the transmission fluid with more
  • – Change dirty transmission fluid or filter
  • Repair of damaged or open cables
  • – Reparing the weak electrical connection in shift solenoid valve circuit
  • – Repairing and replacing damaged connectors and cables
  • Repairing a damaged transmission pump
  • – Replacing a defective hydraulic control unit
  • – In rare cases, replacement of TCM or PCM

How Serious Is the P0782 Fault Coding?

The P0782 error code can lead to transmission damage, increased fuel consumption, shifting problems, and transmission overheating if it is not fixed. The transmission could be damaged if it is left exposed to low fluid too long.
