What is the P0842 fault code. Transmission Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch “A” Circuit Low Input malfunction description How to fix P0842 fault code? What are the symptoms and causes for the P0842 fault?

What is the P0842 Fault code? What does it signify?

When the voltage signal from the transmission oils pressure sensor circuit “A” drops below manufacturer-predetermined parameters, the P0842 code will be activated.

Transmission control modules (TCM and powertrain control module) use the oil pressure sensor to measure hydraulic pressure during shifting. The oil pressure sensor can be found near the hydraulic controller unit (valve body/transmission computer) in the transmission. In some cases, it may be mounted near the transmission case.

The transmission oil-pressure sensor converts the oil pressure into an electronic signal. The sensor’s voltage signal will change if the oil level rises. This information is passed to the PCM/TCM for monitoring the transmission operating pressure and performing the shifting process. If the voltage signal from a sensor is lower than the manufacturer’s parameters, the fault code P0842 is activated. For more information on how to identify the “A”, circuit in your vehicle’s engine, consult specific repair manuals.

Problems with the electrical circuit of a sensor are usually responsible for P0842. But, setting the code could result in transmission oil leaking, cracks in the hydraulic computer or low system operating tension. This can also be caused mechanical problems.

What causes the P0842 Fault code?

Below are some reasons to set fault code P0842:

  • – Broken, damaged, melted, or broken wires, loose connectors and open circuits
  • – Defective electronic pressure control solenoid
  • – Pressure sensor for defective transmission oil
  • – Clogged transmission fluid passagelines
  • – Transmission internal mechanical problems
  • – Transmission oil missing, dirty, or contaminated
  • – Defective high pressure transmission pump
  • – Transmission oil leaks can be caused by gaskets or other components
  • – Defective torque converter clutch connection
  • – Defective PCM / TCM (rarely)

What are the symptoms of the P0842 Fault code?

These symptoms may be present in vehicles with code P0842.

  • – Illumination for the check engine light
  • – The transmission warning lamp is now available
  • – Transmission oil that has been heated
  • – Oily odors emanating from the gearbox
  • Smoke coming from your gearbox
  • Difficulty with gear changes
  • Gearbox slip
  • Transmission oil leaks
  • – Torque converter clutch not engaging or disengaging
  • – The PCM can go into safe mode and lock the vehicle in 2nd, or 3rd gear

How do I fix the P0842 fault code?

There are several repairs that can resolve the P0842 fault code.

  • – Replacing a defective electronic pressure control solenoid
  • – Replacing a defective transmission oil pressure sensor
  • Cleaning blocked transmission fluid passage lines
  • – Repair of mechanical transmission problems
  • – Flush the gearbox and change the oil with the filter
  • – Topping up transmission oil that is not available
  • Repair of damaged cables, connectors and open or short circuits
  • – Replacing a defective transmission high-pressure pump
  • – Repair of transmission oil leaked
  • – Test and replacement of PCM and TCM

How serious is the P0842 Fault code?

P0842 should be addressed immediately as you can’t tell if the fault was electrical, a bad sensor or a fault in the transmission. If you have any of these codes, you could experience severe drivability problems. Failure to correct the problem quickly can lead to a complete breakdown. Leakages can cause the transmission oil to dry out completely. This code should not to be taken lightly as it could lead to high repair costs.
