What is the P0846 fault number? What is the Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch “B” Circuit Range/Performance failure description? How do I fix the P0846 fault code What are the causes and symptoms of the P0846 error code?

What is the P0846 Fault code? What does it signify?

There are several solenoid groups in automatic transmissions that send transmission fluid to different hydraulic circuits. Solenoids can be grouped into circuits, and are known as A, B, or C. The following is the label: Transmission of transmission fluid to various circuits allows the transmission to shift gears. When the voltage signal from the pressure sensor for transmission fluid exceeds the operating range, the fault code P0846 is activated. Refer to your vehicle’s specific repair manual for the correct “B” circuit.

Hydraulic fluid is used to control features like shifting and torque converter lock-up. The transmission oil pressure sensor/switch reads the pressure inside the transmission, converts it into a signal electrically and sends it to either the powertrain controller module (PCM), or the transmission control module(TCM). This signal is used to determine the transmission’s operating pressure by the PCM/TCM. Fault code P0846 indicates that the voltage signal from TFPS is not in line with the normal operating voltages stored within the PCM/TCM memory. Usually, code P0846 refers to an electrical problem with the TFPS sensor. Leaks can also be caused by mechanical problems such as cracks in the hydraulic unit or stuck valves.

Vehicles susceptible to the P0846 fault code include but aren’t limited to various Toyota, Nissan and Jeep models as well as Dodge, Chrysler Dodge, Duramax Honda and Chrysler models.

What is the P0846 Fault Code?

Here are some reasons why P0846 should be set.

  • – The sensor/switch for the transmission oil pressure sensor/defective transmission oil is defective
  • – Defective electronic pressure control solenoid
  • – Damaged or melted wires, broken connectors, loose connections, open or brief circuits
  • Transmission fluid that is low or very heavily soiled
  • – Transmission internal mechanical breakdowns
  • – Defective PCM / TCM (rarely)

What are the symptoms for the P0846 fault code?

Because this is most likely an electric fault, the PCM/TCM may be able to compensate for the problem. Electronically controlled, the PCM/TCM can alter transmission shift settings. Code P0846 can still produce symptoms like:

  • – Illumination for the check engine light
  • Torque converter clutch could fail
  • Transmission could overheat
  • – Difficulty with gear changes or not shifting at any time
  • Gearbox slip
  • – Higher fuel consumption
  • – The PCM can go into safe mode and lock the vehicle in 2nd, or 3rd gear

How do I fix the P0846 fault code?

The following repairs may be able to resolve the P0846 fault code:

  • Repair of damaged cables and connectors, as well as open or short circuits
  • – Change the dirty, contaminated transmission oil along with the filter
  • – To top up low-level transmission oil
  • – Repair transmission oil leaks
  • – Replacing a defective transmission oil pressure sensor
  • – Repair of or replacement of the torque convert
  • – Replacing an inoperable hydraulic control unit
  • – Replacing a defective transmission oil pump
  • – Replacing a defective pressure control solenoid
  • – How to replace a defective pressure regulator
  • – Reprogramming/replacement of PCM /TCM

How serious is the P0846 Fault code?

P0846 code can mean that the vehicle is unusable. The vehicle’s drivability may be affected by moderate conditions. Fault code P0846 can be a serious problem that should be addressed immediately.
