What is the P1101 Fault Code and what does it mean? What does it signify?

If the powertrain control module, PCM detects an error in the voltage signal from mass air flow (MAF), a P1101 malfunction code is generated. When the ignition switch (IS) is in “ON” Position, the sensors perform an automatic self-diagnostic test (Key ON Engine Running / KOE). The test will fail if the voltage signal from MAF sensor is higher than allowed by manufacturer. A P1101 fault code can be set.

The MAF sensor measures the volume and density of air entering an engine. The PCM uses this data to determine the optimal air-fuel combination and improve engine performance.

MAF sensors usually use a heating unit powered by a voltage reference of 5 volts. The resistance changes as air is drawn into the engine. This information is sent to the PCM via an electronic circuit. The PCM measures the amount of air entering an engine via voltage signals and adjusts the fuel injection rate for the injectors in order to maintain the fuel mixture.

The temperature of the air determines its density. To get a more accurate measurement, the PCM can also use data from other sensors such as the engine coolant temperature, intake air temperature, engine speed, and, in some cases, barometric pressure sensors. The PCM must ensure that the MAF sensor has been calibrated properly in order to be able to perform all of these comparisons. It performs two tests to verify the calibration of the MAF sensors voltage signal. The voltage signal from MAF sensor should not exceed 0.27 volts when the ignition switch is in the ON position. The MAF sensor may fail the first test if it is detected at a voltage higher than 0.27 volts. The voltage signal range for the engine when it is turned on is expected to be between 0.46 volts and 2.44 volts. The second test is also failed if the voltage value exceeds any direction. The voltage signal values can vary between applications.

If either the MAF sensor or both fail to pass the self-tests the PCM will not be able to control the fuel injectors effectively and a P1101 code will be generated.

Vehicles susceptible to the P1101 fault code include but aren’t limited to various Ford, Jaguar and Lincoln models as well as Mazda, Mercury and Oldsmobile models.

How do I fix the P1101 fault code?

This code is most commonly set on Ford vehicles and F-series pickup trucks. It is usually caused by engine vacuum leaks and air infiltration downstream of the MAF sensor. This will cause the sensor to fail the second test.

This code can be found on Mercedes models. The most common reason is oil contamination of the MAF sensor’s sensing element, which causes it to report airflow through the sensor at an under-report level.

You can make the following repairs to fix the P1101 fault code:

  • Replace any defective wires, connectors, and components in the MAF Sensor Harness.
  • – Clean the MAF sensor using a special cleaning spray
