What is the P1744 fault codes? What’s the reason for Torque Converter Clutch Systems Stuck Closed? How can I fix P1744 fault code What are the causes and symptoms of the P1744 error code?

What is the P1744 fault code? What does it mean?

P1744 is a manufacturer-specific code (usually used by Ford) that stands for “Torque Converter Clutch System Stuck in Closed Position”. This code is used when the powertrain control module, PCM, detects a problem in the torque converter clutch (TCC).

Modern automatic transmissions come with a torque convertor that, under certain conditions, increases the rotational force transferred between the engine and the transmission. This fluid coupling prevents misfires between the engine, transmission and vehicle when it is in stop and in gear.

Modern torque converters come with a lockup clutch. This creates an electronic link between the engine, transmission and torque converter. It eliminates any energy wastage.

To operate the torque converter clutch, one or more solenoid vales are used by the PCM. If the PCM detects the torque converter not working as it should, code P1744 will be activated.

Note: Depending on which vehicle manufacturer you are using, the definition of P1744 fault code may take on different meanings. Refer to the correct repair manual for more information.

What is the P1744 Fault Code?

Below are some reasons to set fault code P1744:

  • – Low transmission oil
  • – Use a dirty transmission oil
  • – Torque converter solenoid valve defective
  • Circuit problems, such as bad wiring or poor connections
  • – Defective torque converter
  • – Hydraulic control unit failure
  • – Internal mechanical problems in the transmission
  • – Problem with the powertrain control module or transmission control module (TCM).

What are the symptoms of the P1744 Fault Code

You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P1744.

  • – Illumination for check engine light
  • – The gearbox is overheated
  • – Increased fuel consumption
  • – Gearbox slip
  • – Reduced transmission performance
  • – Reduced vehicle power
  • Strange noises coming from the torque converter

How to Fix the P1744 Fault Code

These are some of the possible repairs that could resolve the P1744 fault code:

  • – Topping up transmission oil that is not available
  • – Replacing dirty transmission oils and filters
  • – Cleaning clogged liquid passage lines
  • – Repairing damaged wires, connections, or open or close circuit to the clutch solenoid vale
  • – Replacing a TCC solenoid valve that is not working
  • – How to replace a defective torque converter
