What is the P2098 fault number? What’s the reason for the Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System Too Lean Bank II fault? How do I fix P2098 fault code What are the causes and symptoms of the P2098 error code?

What is the P2098 fault code? What does it signify?

A code P2098 will trigger if the powertrain controller module (PCM), receives a signal after the catalytic convert from the downstream oxygen sensor that the fuel mix is too lean (too fuel, low fuel). The engine bank that does NOT contain cylinder 1 is called “Bank 2”.

O2 oxygen sensors are used to measure the oxygen content of the exhaust system. The fuel mixture will be less lean if it has a higher oxygen content. Low oxygen content indicates a rich mixture.

The PCM adjusts the mixture of air and fuel based on data from O2 sensors. Each exhaust system equipped with a catalytic conversion has at minimum two oxygen sensors. One between the engine and converter and one after it. The PCM determines the effectiveness of the catalytic convertor by comparing their voltage signals. The sensor that is before the catalytic convert measures the exhaust gases generates a voltage signal. After the exhaust gases have passed through the converter they are again measured by the O2 sensor. The voltage signal from this second sensor should be lower. If the voltage signal doesn’t change, one of O2 sensors is failing or the catalytic convert and its components are in trouble.

There are many models of Jeep, Ford and Chrysler that are prone to the P2098 fault code.

What is the P2098 Fault Code?

This code may trigger for many reasons. Below are some reasons why P2098 might be set.

  • – Leakage of the exhaust system
  • – Defective oxygen sensor
  • Circuit problems with the postcatalyst oxygen sensor (damaged wires and loose connectors, open, or shorted).
  • – Lean mixture conditions due to defective components (eg vacuum leaks or MAF sensor malfunction)
  • – Filters that are blocked
  • – Defective fuel pump
  • – Defective fuel pressure regulator
  • Fuel injector problems
  • – Defective catalyst converter
  • – Exhaust manifolds and components rusty or cracked
  • – The PCM is failing or needs to be updated

What are the symptoms of the P2098 Fault Code?

You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P2098:

  • – Keep the check engine light on, or flashing it, if there are severe engine misfires.
  • – Fluctuations at idle speed
  • – Acceleration with low engine power
  • Engine misfire
  • – Overheating the catalytic convert
  • – Increased fuel consumption

How do I fix the P2098 fault code?

  • – Repair of exhaust leaks
  • – Replacing the faulty oxygen sensor
  • Troubleshooting an oxygen sensor circuit
  • – Replacing damaged wires or connectors to the O2 sensors
  • – Vacuum leak repairs
  • – Elimination engine mechanical failures
