What is the P2118 fault code What is the Throttle Actuator Motor Control Current Range/Performance Failure? How can you fix P2118 fault code What are the causes and symptoms of the P2118 error code?

What is the P2118 Fault Code and what does it mean? What does it all mean?

P2118 OBD II malfunction codes indicate that the powertrain controller module (PCM), has detected an issue with the throttle actuator control system. Six codes are associated with throttle actuator controller faults. These are P2107 (P2108), P2111, P2112, and P2118 (and P2119). A code P2118 will be set if the PCM detects the throttle actuator motor is out-of-range and is not functioning properly.

The PCM controls the throttle actuator control by monitoring one or several throttle position sensors. The position of the throttle plate is determined by the throttle actuator. The PCM monitors and adjusts throttle plate opening according to driver demand. The throttle actuator adjusts the throttle plate opening by changing the current to control motor. The system may not function properly if there are malfunctions. In this case, the engine could not start at all and the PCM might place the vehicle on failsafe mode.

P2118 is a fault code that affects vehicles from Toyota, Honda and Lexus.

What causes the P2118 fault code?

Here are some reasons why P2118 should be set.

  • – Motor control motor for the throttle actuator is defective
  • – Defective throttle body
  • – Dirty throttle plate
  • – Broken cables, rusty connectors or loose connections
  • – Open circuit or short circuit in throttle actuator circuit
  • – Defective throttle position sensor
  • – Defective accelerator pedal position sensor
  • – The PCM is not functioning properly or needs to be updated.

What are the symptoms for the P2118 fault code?

You may experience the following symptoms if you own a vehicle that has the code P2118:

  • – Illumination for check engine light
  • – The vehicle can be put into failsafe or safe mode
  • – The engine might not start even though it cranks.
  • – After starting the engine, the engine might stop.
  • Engine misfires are easily seen
  • – Low engine performance during acceleration
  • – It is possible that there may not be any throttle response
  • Smoke can be seen coming from the exhaust pipe
  • – Fuel consumption might increase

How do I fix the P2118 fault code?

Code P2118 often comes with other codes that are related to throttle control. Any of these codes can trigger the P2118 error code. It is therefore important to order fault codes according to priority.

There are several repairs that can resolve the P2118 fault code.

  • – Replacing your throttle body
  • – Clean the throttle plate, coupling
  • – Replacing your throttle position sensor
  • – Replacing throttle actuator control motor
  • – Replacing the accelerator pedal position sensor
  • – Cleaning corrosion on connectors
  • – Repair and replacement of cables
  • – Reprogramming the PCM or replacing it

How serious is the P2118 Fault Code

Code P2118 can stop the car’s throttle working. This can cause serious problems. The vehicle may stop starting or have other driving issues. Vehicles that stall can be dangerous and should not ever be driven. It is crucial that the problem be fixed as soon as possible.
