What is the P2198 fault number? What is the description for the O2 Sensor Biased/Stuck-Rich (Bank 2 Sensor 1) failure How do I fix P2198 fault codes? What are the causes of P2198 fault code symptoms?

What is the P2198 fault code? What does it signify?

The vehicle’s primary computer, also known as the powertrain control unit (PCM), takes input from several sensors in order to determine the optimal fuel-air ratio. The oxygen sensor is one important sensor that provides data to the PCM. The upstream oxygen sensor, which precedes the catalytic convertor, is called “Sensor 1”. This sensor measures the oxygen levels in exhaust gases from the combustion chamber and determines if the engine is running lean or rich. When the PCM detects problems with the signals from these sensors it will issue several fault codes. One of these codes, P2198, is one.

The voltage signal sent to the PCM from the upstream sensor by P2198 indicates that there is a rich condition (too little fuel) and it triggers the P2198 alarm. The signal generated by the upstream zirconia oxygen sensor is constantly switched between rich (below 0.45 V) and lean (0.45 V). If the PCM finds that the sensor is consistently producing signals above 0.45 V, it sets code 2198. “Bank 2”, the engine’s side, is the one that does NOT contain cylinder #1.

Note: This fault code is very similar P2195,P2196 and P2197. Correct multiple fault codes at once.

What causes the P2198 Fault code?

  • – Bank 2 Sensor 1 – Defective oxygen sensor or A/F sensor
  • – Weak connections and wire damage to the oxygen sensor circuit
  • – Incorrect or high fuel pressure
  • – Defective fuel pump
  • Leaky fuel injector
  • – Defective fuel pressure regulator
  • – Defective fuel pressure sensor
  • – Fuel filter blocked
  • – Vacuum leaks
  • – Exhaust leaks
  • Leakage in the PCV system
  • – Defective A/F sensor relay
  • – Sensor to detect defective mass airflow (MAF)
  • – Defective ECT sensor
  • – Air intake restriction
  • – A PCM that is not working or requires a software upgrade

What are the symptoms of the P2198 Fault code?

  • – Illumination for the check engine light
  • – Engine hard start
  • – Engine hesitation during acceleration
  • – Engine performance problems
  • – Excellent working conditions
  • – Increased fuel consumption

How to Fix the P2198 Fault Code

  • – Replacement of the A/F or upstream oxygen sensor in the second exhaust bank
  • – Replacement of connectors or cables that are associated with the oxygen sensor
  • Repair vacuum leaks
  • – Fixing problems such as faulty fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump.
  • – Repair of exhaust leaks
  • – Testing and checking of other sensors like MAF, IAT fuel pressure sensor, and ECT sensor
  • – Reprogramming or replacement of a faulty PCM

How serious is the P2198 Fault code?

The code will not affect the vehicle’s drivability. Fuel is not something we like to waste. You should consider the additional fuel costs if you find this fault code in your vehicle. This fault code should be fixed as soon as possible if you want to save fuel. It can cause engine damage and increase repair costs if it is not addressed immediately.
