What is the P2272 fault number? What is O2 Sensor signal stuck / unstable lean (Bank 2 Sensor 2) failure description? How can you fix the fault code P2272? What are the causes and symptoms of the P2272 error code?

What is the P2272 Fault code? What does it signify?

O2 sensors measure the oxygen content of the exhaust gases. The sensor generates voltage signals according to the oxygen content of the exhaust gases, and then sends them to powertrain control module (PCM). These signals are used by the PCM to adjust fuel delivery to the engine.

Low oxygen levels in exhaust gases will cause the engine to run in a rich mixture (less fuel + less air). Low oxygen levels in exhaust gases will cause O2 sensor voltages to rise to 1,000 mV. If the O2 sensor voltage is too high (too much oxygen + too little fuel), the engine may become lean and the voltage signal to the sensor could drop to 10mV. O2 sensors can generate 10 voltage signals per second depending on how much oxygen is present.

The base value for the PCM is 450 mV, which is the difference between high and lower voltage signals. It compares voltage signals from sensors with information stored in its memories. Calculates the time the voltage was outside of the range and the number of signals that exceeded the range. Fault code P2272 will trigger if most voltage signals are out of range. The code’s description states that “Bank 2” refers to an engine bank that does NOT contain cylinder 1 of your engine. “Sensor 2”, indicates an issue in the downstream O2 sensor following the catalytic convert. Some vehicles might have a third downstream oxygen sensor. If this sensor fails, the fault code P2276 is activated.

The P2272 fault code can affect vehicles of all makes and models, including but not limited to Ford, BMW, Chevy GMC, GMC, Audi.

What causes the P2272 Fault code?

Below are some reasons to set fault code P2272:

  • – Defective oxygen sensor (Bank 2 Sensor 2)
  • – Sensors for defective air flow (MAF), or other sensors related to air-fuel mixture
  • Vacuum leaks
  • – Fuel delivery issues
  • Problems with fuel pressure
  • – Defective fuel injectors
  • – Exhaust leak in front the O2 sensor
  • – Broken, corroded cables and loose, rusty connections
  • Cable problems, such as short circuits and open circuits
  • – A PCM that is not working or needs a software upgrade

What are the symptoms for P2272’s Fault Code?

You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P2272:

  • – Illumination at the check engine lights
  • – Low engine performance
  • – Increased fuel consumption
  • PCM can set the vehicle in failsafe mode

Notice: The check engine light will be turned off if a fault is not detected after 3 driving cycles.

How to Fix the P2272 Fault Code

There are several repairs that can resolve the P2272 fault code.

  • – Replacing oxygen sensor (Bank 2 Sensor 2).
  • – Repairing the oxygen sensor wires and replacing worn or rusty connectors
  • – Inspecting and fixing leaks in the exhaust system
  • – Repairing or cleaning faulty fuel injectors
  • – PCM replacement (rarely)
