Why is the fuel filler cap warning light on? What is the fuel tank warning lamp? Is it safe for me to drive with the fuel-tank warning light on?

You probably know that your car pumps liquid gasoline from its fuel tank into the engine so it can be ignited with the spark plugs. You may have gasoline left over from the fuel tank that evaporates and is sent back to your engine for use later. The gasoline evaporated is stored in a separate canister, called a “canister” . Once certain driving conditions have been met, the valve connecting the canister to the engine opens. The fuel vapors are then burned in the combustion chamber.

Sealing the fuel system is crucial for it to work properly. To prevent any vapors from escaping, most fuel filler caps include a rubber O ring. The PCM monitors fuel tank conditions and will display a warning light on your instrument panel if there is a leak.

Why does the Fuel Tank Warning Light flash?

The PCM may have detected a fuel filler cap leak if this light appears on the cluster. This can usually be caused by a loose or poorly seated tank cap. This light will come on when you are driving. Pull your car to safety and inspect the tank cap. You can then continue driving. This light should go out after a few days. If the light still does not turn on, make sure to check the tank cap for damage and replace it if necessary.

Leakages in the system may cause the light to turn on if the PCM is not working correctly. If the light is not going out despite the tank cap being in perfect condition, a professional mechanic might need to examine the entire system.

Is it safe to drive with the fuel tank warning light on?

When the light is on, you’ll notice a decrease in vehicle performance. The engine will work harder and produce less acceleration power. This could lead to a slight increase of fuel consumption. Additionally, your fuel tank may release environmentally harmful gasses.

Without the EVAP system, the gasoline-derived hydrocarbons would cause severe damage to our air quality. Regular maintenance of the EVAP systems reduces fuel consumption and protects the environment.
